What Are Traditional and Clear Braces?

Thanks to modern technologies and many orthodontic improvements, conventional metal braces are more comfortable and affordable than ever before. Dali Dental offers traditional metal braces and clear Invisalign® aligners to accommodate the many wants and needs of our Plano, TX patients. Traditional braces offer fun customizations that aren't possible with removable aligners — many of our patients enjoy showing off their personalities by selecting different colored elastic bands. This is particularly a fun feature for younger patients who are going to their school sports games as they can show their team spirit. Clear aligners, however, offer a discreet way for individuals to enhance their smile without the limitations that traditional braces present. Either way, Dr. Dao Pham can help you choose the best orthodontic option to fit your needs and lifestyle. To find out more about traditional metal braces and Invisalign orthodontics, schedule an appointment at our office in Plano, TX.

What Can I Expect When Getting Braces Or Invisalign Aligners?

After your initial exam, an individualized treatment program will be created by Dr. Pham based on whether you or your child want traditional metal braces or Invisalign treatments. Your particular treatment will vary, depending on which option was chosen.

If you opted for traditional metal braces, your teeth will be thoroughly prepped and cleaned before applying the metal braces. Once we've brushed the bonding agent to the teeth, metal mounts will be placed. Once all the braces are in place, Dr. Pham will thread the wire through them. Then, you'll have the ability to choose your desired elastic band color(s). The very small bands keep the archwires attached to the brackets. The procedure generally moves quite fast and patients often experience little to no pain. You can expect to come back to Dali Dental around once a month for adjustments and progress exams.

To start your Invisalign treatment, our Plano, TX team will take an impression of the lower and upper teeth, which will be sent to the dedicated laboratory where your unique teeth aligners will be created. After the aligners are forwarded to our office, we will have you come in to pick up the first pair and discuss instructions for use. The teeth aligners should be worn over the teeth for a minimum of 20 – 22 hours each day and only taken out prior to brushing, flossing, eating meals, or drinking. Approximately every 1 – 2 weeks, you should trade your current pair of teeth aligners for the next in line. One of our staff members will help you schedule monthly follow-up appointments at Dali Dental so Dr. Pham can monitor your orthodontic progression.

About Us
Should I get traditional braces or Invisalign?

The choice between traditional braces and Invisalign depends on several factors, including the complexity of your dental issues, lifestyle preferences, and budget. Traditional braces are effective for more complex alignment and bite issues and are usually more cost-effective. Invisalign offers a discreet appearance and can be removed for eating and brushing, making it a popular choice for adults and teens looking for a less noticeable option.

How should I clean my braces/aligners?

For traditional braces, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to clean around wires and brackets. Floss daily with a floss threader or orthodontic floss to reach between braces and under wires. For Invisalign aligners, rinse them every night and brush them gently with a toothbrush and clear soap. Avoid using colored or scented soaps, as they may stain or leave residue on the aligners.

What happens once my orthodontic treatment is finished?

After completing orthodontic treatment, whether with traditional braces or Invisalign, you will likely need to wear a retainer to maintain your new smile. Retainers help to hold teeth in their new position while the surrounding gums and bones adjust. The duration for wearing a retainer varies, and some may need it for a prolonged period or even indefinitely during nighttime. Regular follow-up visits with Dr. Pham will also ensure that your teeth remain in alignment.
